As Turner shows Sutton around, they meet local junk-yard owner Amos Reed (John McIntire), who is Turner's friend and owner of Hooch (Beasley the Dog), a large and slobbery Dogue de Bordeaux. After a thug kills Amos, Turner pleads with police chief Howard Hyde (Craig T. Nelson) to let him take on Amos's case. Believing that Hooch is the only 'witness' he has, Turner brings him home. On a positive note, however, Hooch also instigates a romance between Turner and the new town veterinarian Emily Carson (Mare Winningham); Hooch also starts his own romance with the vet’s dog, Camille. Turner and Hooch slowly bond, and they work together to solve the crime. It’s a drug-smuggling operation, run out of a local seafood distributor, with money-laundering assistance from the corrupt police chief Hyde.

When the drug kingpin is cornered, Hooch takes a bullet for his human buddy and dies despite Emily’s best efforts. During the aftermath, Turner is the police chief while Sutton is the leading investigator. Turner is also married to Emily, with the couple now caring for Camille and her litter of puppies, one of whom that looks and acts exactly like Hooch. ► Trivia ☆ Hooch is a Dogue de Bordeaux, one of the most ancient French breeds. ☆ Henry Winkler was originally hired as the director. But, two weeks into filming, he was fired by Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg who was dissatisfied with Winkler's work.

☆ An alternate ending was filmed in which Hooch survives. Both endings were tested with different audiences. The endings scored the same. But the original ending provoked a passionate emotional response from the audience while the alternate ending elicited a quietly positive response. Disney production chief Jeffrey Katzenberg decided to use the original ending because that is what the filmmakers wanted. ☆ The two other investigators are Foster and McCabe which were the same names of the second team to tail Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop (1984), also written by Daniel Petrie, Jr. ☆ Tom Hanks father's name is Amos, just like the elderly man in the movie.

☆ The last film project of John McIntire. Director: Roger Spottiswoode Writers: Dennis Shryack (story), Michael Blodgett (story) ► Review Turner and Hooch is an underrated forgotten gem from the late 1980's. Tom Hanks plays clean cut police detective Scott Turner whom is nearly finishing up his last shifts in his quiet old town and he will transfer to the big city. He has to then postpone his trip due to the untimely death of an old man and foul play is suspected. A junkyard dog 'Hooch' is the closest thing to a witness but he is being threatened to be put down unless Scott takes in him. Overall this movie is funny but has great heart.

You get to see Turner progress from an tentive, uptight, by the book cop to a laid backed, relaxed, Casanova. This is a great film for the whole family however there may be some frightening scenes for younger children. Please give this great forgotten film a chance.
